What is your favorite memory, story, experience, etc. while at the University Fire Department?
In accordance with the semi-legal document my fellow alumni and I had entered into at the time of our departing UAF, I am legally bound to not disclose any stories. J This goes for all the rest of you also! (Styers) They were amazing times full of fond memories, great experiences and fantastic friendships that have lasted a lifetime. There are times when I have to raise a glass and thank the administrative staff at UAFD for giving me the education and the encouragement to turn a passion into a career and ultimately give me the ability to raise a family comfortably, contribute to my community and represent those Chief Officers as the next generation of fire fighters in the state.
Brief History/Biography: I left UAF around 1988 to go to Paramedic school at the University of Iowa. Upon returning, I got back into the Fire Hall to finish up my degree and shortly afterwards I got hired at the City of Kenai in September of 1990. I was the first Paramedic hired for the City and the first UAF graduate to get hired here. (Thank you to Chief Vern Long) Since that time we have hired 7 or 8 UAF graduates with 4 presently still on staff. I was fortunate to get into the City after a long time of stagnation and those hired before me retired shortly after I got here. Opportunities for advancement allowed me to advance to the Assistant Chief’s position after 10 years and I have been the Fire Chief for the last 7. Kenai has been a great place to work and raise kids with great schools and plenty of outdoor activities. 23 years of career service.
