What is your favorite memory, story, experience, etc. while at the University Fire Department?

The fire department dormitory: absolutely the best place on earth; Training as a team; Early morning fire calls to Chena Ridge and Farmer’s Loop where we usually saved the foundations; Learning to alpine ski on the “hill” west of the dining hall AFTER packing the slope manually with our skis; Rebuilding a military surplus jeep with Chief Patterson; Maintaining the fire trucks in the University shop; Hunting caribou along the Steese and Denali Highways; Camping at the abandoned gold dredges around Fairbanks and along the McKinley Park road inside the park, driving to Wonder Lake; Walking to downtown Fairbanks in the ice fog at minus 30; Heating motor oil to pour into engines to get them started; Spring breakup.

Brief History/Biography:

Born in Sacramento, California in 1946. Parents were economic migrants to northern Nevada in 1957. Attended Reno-area schools.  At UAF was pump operator/driver at University Fire Department for two years as a freshman and sophomore. After transferring outside to UNR, worked for the Nevada Division of Forestry on fire crews and served with the Verdi Volunteer Fire Department. A 4-year college draft deferment and 6 years in the Nevada Air National Guard as an electronics technician kept me out of Vietnam. Worked in the construction trades for a few years until the 1972 recession sent me back to school.  Thereafter, I worked as a government lawyer in water rights, public works and utilities for the county district attorney’s office (17 years) and the state (13 years), retiring from the Nevada Attorney General’s Office in 2006. Volunteer activities have included the county search and rescue unit, Red Cross disaster relief, board member for public employees’ health benefits program, and teaching at the Sky Tavern Junior Ski program.
